Scream Hello - Smart and Stupid A teaser EP before their most recent full length. Four songs of smart, technical indie rock that sounds like Braid moved to New Brunswick and picked up a little of that Red Leader sound.
Deep Sleep - Manic Euphoria A quick 7" from Grave Mistake. Kinda has an 80s Southern Cali skate punk/hardcore sound to it. Somehow I keep missing them in Philly.
Blacklisted - Live on WERS Philly hardcore champs Blacklisted playing a bunch of older songs, and some songs from Peace on Earth, War on Stage. One mp3, about 16 minutes long, all awesome.
You and I - Discography Remember when screamo wasn't a dirty word? This is one of my favorite records from this genre. Spastic and screamy at times, reserved and intricate at others.
Common Rider - This is Unity Music Jesse Michael's from Operation Ivy's next band. Kinda reggae, kinda ska, kinda punk. Anyone have the first LP for me? He's got a new band too that's a bit more punk and will be awesome.
Super Hi Five - Songs for Working Gruff punk with "emo" moments. This band really hit their stride with this record and the 10" that preceded it. It's a beautiful and a shame that their live show was usually a drunken mess.
Nightmare of You - s/t Indie pop from members of the Movielife and various other NYC bands (Gorilla Biscuits anyone?) doing their best to rip off the Smiths. To be honest, I hate the rest of their catalog, but I love this full length. Check it out
Hail Social - Modern Love and Death This Philadelphia dancey pop band should have been the next big thing, but sorta fizzled out. I defy you to listen to "Anna Belle" and have it not get stuck in your head.
Dutchland Diesel - All New Police Recently I posted their second LP, but here is the first, featuring "My Jam" - the song I mentioned loving from the Creep compilation. Enjoy.
Trial by Fire - Ringing in the Dawn This band should have been as big as Kid Dynamite or Strike Anywhere or any of the Jade Tree bands of that era. For some reason though, they never took off, and were kind of forgotten. I wish their singer would do a new band.
Chamberlain - The Moon, My Saddle Beautiful indie rock from Doghouse Records. I remember playing a song on a comp for friends in high school and getting made fun of, then they all grew up and loved it. Looks like I got the last laugh. I think they're reuniting soon.
Wormbath - 18 Song Demo When I was 15-16, I loved this demo. These guys were just fun as hell pop punk. They didn't care about being perfect or really fitting in with the bands they played with, but they were really fun.
Kid Dynamite - Shorter, Faster, Louder "Hardcore for girls." The second LP (that you should probably have) from this Philly band. Loses a bit of steam towards the middle, but still great. Check it out
The Mr. T Experience - Love is Dead Lookout pop punk from the mid 90s, so you probably know the deal. Dr. Frank is one of my favorite pop punk lyricist. Witty, clever, yet tasteful. Did I post his solo record yet?
No Roses - Hell or High Water Similar to later AN/GUTG, or a more melodic Hope Conspiracy, hardcore from Philly. Members went on to Blacklisted and Shook Ones.
The Backup Plan - Dearest Whomever Kid Dynamite and Lifetime worship from Long Island. This was my favorite from that crop of bands doing that whole thing.
Fairweather - Alaska The oft-overlooked middle EP from these guys. This shows them branching out from the more "emo" pop punk of the first record and getting a bit more angular and aggressive.
