Breaking Pangaea - Live at WXPN

Breaking Pangaea - Live at WXPN
Sort of by request. I've already said more than enough great things about this band. Here's another live set, but this one has more songs.

Check it out

Falling Sickness - Because the World Has Failed Us Both

Falling Sickness - Because the World Has Failed Us Both
You probably remember this band from early Hopeless Records compilations. Kinda punk, kinda ska.

Check it out

Bill Evans - Everybody Digs Bill Evans

Bill Evans - Everybody Digs Bill Evans
Everyone knows that heroin addicts can make awesome music. Bill Evans was doing that back in the 50s. One of the most influential jazz pianists of all time.

Check it out

Engine Down - To Bury Within The Sound

Engine Down - To Bury Within The Sound
RVA indie rock. You should probably already know about this band. I posted a bunch of Denali recently, and they're from that same family tree.

Maryland punk/hardcore.

Check it out

These Arms Are Snakes - Easter

These Arms Are Snakes - Easter
My favorite record from this post-hardcore band featuring guys from Botch, among others.

Check it out

Embrace - Embrace

Embrace - Embrace
While Minor Threat is the Ian band I respect the most, I find myself most drawn to Embrace musically. Along with Rites of Spring, these guys typify the Rev Summer/harDCore sound of the early to mid-80s.

Check it out

The Color Fred - Domestic Disturbance Acoustic Set

The Color Fred - Domestic Disturbance Acoustic Set
A few years ago Fred Mascherino (Breaking Pangaea, Terrible Things, Taking Back Sunday, etc) did a solo set for Domestic Disturbance. He does a bunch of songs from The Color Fred (his band at the time), as well as a song each from Brody and Breaking Pangaea.

Tragedy - Nerve Damage

Tragedy - Nerve Damage
You know the deal with these hardcore punk legends.

Check it out

Tuesday - Demos

Tuesday - Demos
Tuesday was a short-lived indie/pop punk band fronted by Dan from Alkaline Trio. Their LP was called Freewheelin and I probably already uploaded it. These are some rough demos.

Check it out

The Anniversary - Designing a Nervous Breakdown

The Anniversary - Designing a Nervous Breakdown
Synthy indie-pop from Vagrant Records from the early 2000s. The first song and the fourth song are totally off the charts.

Check it out

Denali - Denali

Denali - Denali
I posted The Instinct the other day, and now this is their first record. I love Maura.

Denali - The Instinct

Denali - The Instinct
If the ancient Greeks hear Denali, they'd be pretty sure Maura Davis was a siren and would be wrecking their ships everywhere. Atmospheric indie rock with beautiful vocals.

Deadline - 8/2/82

Deadline - 8/2/82
A lost classic from the early 80s Dischord scene. This was rereleased in 2007.

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie - Live at Town Hall

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie - Live at Town Hall
Following yesterday's great jazz "duet", I figured I'd upload another pairing of jazz greats.

Check it out

Charles Bukowski - Hostage

Charles Bukowski - Hostage
When I was in college, I went through that typical early-20s Bukowski phase. I liked his poetry a lot, but never got into his novels. Here's a collection of poetry/spoken word stuff.

Footnotes - Everything Last Year

Footnotes - Everything Last Year
Recently I've gotten into the EP Summer Shit by Footnotes, who I just found out were from Philly/South Jersey. How is this band in my backyard and I've never heard of them? Great singy-shouty emo with twinkly guitars. They posted two other 7"s on their Myspace for free download as well, so listen to it. Then buy Summer Shit.

Check it out

Buddy Rich and Max Roach - Rich Vs Roach

Buddy Rich and Max Roach - Rich Vs Roach
Two of the greatest jazz drummer of all time and their bands. Very unique, very influential, very awesome.

Check it out

Breaking Pangaea - Cannon to a Whisper

Breaking Pangaea - Cannon to a Whisper
The only LP from this Philly/West Chester/Coatesville band who was one of my favorite local bands of all time. This is another upload inspired by the Terrible Things record.

Check it out

Boys Life - Boys Life

Boys Life - Boys Life
I've previously posted Departures and Landfalls from this classic midwest emo band, so hopefully you're familiar with this. You really should be, if you're not.

Check it out

Weerd Science - Friends and Nervous Breakdowns

Weerd Science - Friends and Nervous Breakdowns
Lately I've been listening to the new Terrible Things record a lot, which this dude drummed on. He also used to drum in Coheed and Cambria. This is his white-boy rap album. I'll be honest, I forgot I had these mp3s, but since I've been listenin to the TT album, I figured I'd up it.

As Friends Rust - Won

As Friends Rust - Won
I posted their last EP the other day, but this was the LP that preceded it. This was a nice middle-ground between their more straight up melodic hardcore and their more ambitious later stuff.

Check it out

Bones Brigade - I Hate Myself When I'm Not Skateboarding

Bones Brigade - I Hate Myself When I'm Not Skateboarding
Remember when you were in high school and just got to skate and listen to punk rock records? That was awesome.

Check it out

The Ataris - Anywhere But Here

The Ataris - Anywhere But Here
When we were younger we loved this because it sounded like a lost early Green Day record. They got lamer and more "mature" as they grew up, but this record was fun as hell.

New bands: Snake Road / Quiet Arcs

Quiet Arcs are a new band from the dudes that brought you Crumbler, Aneurysm Rats and One Up. If you liked those bands, there is no reason you shouldn't love the song that Quiet Arcs put up. They'll have more up soon.

Snake Road are a metallic hardcore band with riffs. Lots of riffs. Their entire demo is up for a free download on their bandcamp page.

World's Fastest Car - Unreleased
This was Walter's bridge from Quicksand to Rival Schools. This was supposed to be released by Rev, but never was.

Check it out

World Burns to Death - Totalitarian Sodomy

World Burns to Death - Totalitarian Sodomy
Heavy hardcore punk. Members of Severed Head of State, From Ashes Rise, and tons other, so you kinda know what to expect with this one.

Check it out

Aneurysm Rats - Dying to Live

Aneurysm Rats - Dying to Live
This was the only record from this band, which had guys from One Up, Crumbler, and None More Black. Pretty straight ahead hardcore, entertaining lyrics.

Check it out

As Friends Rust - A Young Trophy Band...

As Friends Rust - A Young Trophy Band...
The last EP from this Florida melodic punk/hardcore band. They branched out a little bit on this one and kinda alienated a big chunk of their fanbase. Whatever, I thought it was pretty good.

River City High - Forgets Their Manners

River City High - Forgets Their Manners
In the late 90s or early 2000s, my old band played some firehall in the middle of nowhere and these guys blew all the high school bands off the stage. Super poppy and energetic. They never really took off, but seemed to open every emo/pop punk for a few years. Members of Fun Size and Inquisition.

Check it out

Ninja Gun - Restless Rubes

Ninja Gun - Restless Rubes
Folky, country-ish rock that the Vinyl Collective and punknews.org kids seem to eat up. This was towards the top of a lot year end lists in 2008.

Check it out

Racetraitor - Burn the Idol of the White Messiah

Racetraitor - Burn the Idol of the White Messiah
Political, straight edge, vegan metalcore featuring Andy from Fall Out Boy.

Hate5six Productions was there filming the whole thing and is starting to get videos up online. Go, check them out, download them, mosh in your bedroom, then donate to hate5six!

Marigold - 2006 Demos

Marigold - 2006 Demo
The last songs that Marigold recorded, after Vadim left and with PJ Bond on vocals. These songs were all great. My old band played a whole bunch of shows with them and they were always fun as hell.

Check it out

Ley Royal Scam - Demo

Ley Royal Scam - Demo
Female fronted pop, not unlike Zolof, from West Chester a few years back. Featuring the one and only Tom Martin. I dare you not to get "Are You Feeling My Disco?" stuck in your head.

Kid Dynamite - Live at CBGB (Video)

Kid Dynamite - Live at CBGB (Video)
Back in 2005 Lifetime was supposed to be playing Hellfest, but it was canceled. They ended up playing a handful of reunion shows in Philly, and Kid Dynamite in New York. I pretty much based an entire weekend and changed my move-back date to college around these shows. We went out to this and it was fun as hell. I can't wait to see them again on Sunday at This is Hardcore.

Check it out (this is a sendspace link, so if it dies, leave a comment and re-up)

Kill Verona - The Kill Verona EP

Kill Verona - The Kill Verona EP
This was actually recorded and released when they were called Little League, but then inspired their name change after their cease and desist order. This was my favorite of all of their record. Still poppy punk songs, but with a bit of the ambition that really came out on Trauma.

Check it out

Lasalle - Expedition Songs

Lasalle - Expedition Songs
One of the dudes from Small Brown Bike and his wife put out an album of indie rock stuff. It was pretty cool, but doesn't touch the SBB records. They still play occasionally I believe and put out another album as well.

Check it out

Isaac Hurt - Demo

Isaac Hurt - Demo
This NJ band put out a solid demo of atmospheric, spacey instrumental songs, but then I never heard anything else from them.

Super Hi Five - Split with Six South

Super Hi Five - Split With SixSouth
These are only the Super Hi Five songs from the split. I don't think I ever even had the others, and I'm pretty sure it never came out anyway. Super Hi Five just kept getting better (recorded) as they went along.

Check it out

Glass and Ashes - s/t

Glass and Ashes - s/t
Gruff, angular post-hardcore on No Idea Records. Members of Young Livers play(ed?) in this band too.

Check it out

Tokyo - Two Songs

Tokyo - Two Songs
Tokyo was a short lived band featuring Dmitri from Dillinger Escape Plan and some of the guys from Knives Out. They played a handful of shows. I'm not sure if these songs were ever officially released or not.

Used Kids - Yeah No

Used Kids - Yeah No
I typically don't like anything Mikey Erg is involved with, so I avoided this at first, but I was wrong on that one. Husker Du-ish, with scratchy vocals and catchy songs.

Check it out

Kill Verona - Trauma

Kill Verona - Trauma
The last record from these Philly guys. It was great to watch them progress from a poppy punk band to a spacy, layered almost post hardcore band. People weren't really into this because it didn't have the same energy of the early stuff, but it's awesome.

Check it out

Frail - Make Your Own Noise

Frail - Make Your Own Noise
Classic Philly screamy, spastic hardcore. Members of Ink and Dagger.

Check it out

Fireworks - All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion

Fireworks - All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion
I'm not really into this record, but with kids really getting back into that whole super poppy punk with breakdowns thing (which some bands are doing really well), a lot of people really like Fireworks. So, if that's your thing, you may like this.

Comadre - A Wolf Ticket, Mixtapes 1-3, Glasses Split
I'm not usually one to just repost other people's links, but Comadre have all of these records posted on their own site, so I'll just give a link to that page. This band is fucking great. Super creative and unique, really DIY, and they really just seem to be doing all the right things. A Wolf Ticket and the Glasses split have been the soundtrack to my two weeks in Portugal.

Posting from Lisbon

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. First my computer crapped out on me. Then I was hosting a Portuguese guy for two weeks, and now I've been in Lisbon for four days and haven't really felt the urge to put any records up. When I get back home in about a week and a half I'll get to it. Until then, check out my travel pics at http://oldrules.tumblr.com.
