Bear Vs Shark - Terrorhawk Spastic, high energy post hardcore/indie rock. I've previously upped their first LP, but this second one seems to be held in higher regard. Both are great.
One Up - The Single This was the last record from this Philly area hardcore band. This was a nice departure from typical sxe hardcore to a more post-hardcore Burn feel, and even includes a Texas is the Reason cover. Sorry for m4a, but that's how they posted it digitally.
Breaking Pangaea - Live at WKDU One of my favorite local bands of all time. They were good recorded, but GREAT live, so it's cool to have a well recorded live set. It's got a mix of songs from their first EP and LP. Check it out
No Roses - Demo I upped the EP previously, and I hate to be that dude, but the demo really may be better. A little more raw and less GUTG influence. I do wish there'd been more from this band. Check it out
Halfway to Holland - Demo Pre-Algernon emo from the Philly suburbs. I have a "discography" from somewhere, but the tracks aren't labeled. I can up it if there's an interest. Check it out
Arms 0f Orion - The Book Was So Much Better Catchy, early 2000s style pop punk from these Philly by way of West Chester kids. This was supposed to come out on some label that ended up screwing them, so they just "leaked" it digitally. Check it out
Breaking Pangaea - Take Apart the Words By request. The first EP from one of my favorite local bands of all time. Beautiful, technical guitars and some of my favorite drumming on an indie rock record. I loved this band. Check it out
Emergency - Unfinished / Unplanned Evan from the Progress/IIOI, Jon from No Roses, and some others playing fairly technical, upbeat pop punk with an early 2000s emo feel. Not unlike the Progress. Check it out
Algernon Cadwallader - Live on WKDU Philly's heroes of noodly, twinkly, off-key, Kinsella inspired emo. While I like their records, seeing them live is even better, and this radio set does a good job of capturing this. Check it out
Paint it Black - CVA By request. At this point, you probably have made up your mind on PIB, but if not, here is the first LP. In my opinion, they've only gotten better with each release, but a lot of people prefer the stripped down anger of the first one. Diff'rent strokes I suppose. Check it out
Chuck Ragan - The Blueprint Sessions You know the deal with Chuck. This is a collection of his No Idea 7"s from 2006-07. These are a lot of early versions of songs that later made their way onto other releases. There are some great songs on here, as well as a Leatherface cover!
For Science - Way Out of Control Don Giovanni pop punk from the NY/North Jersey scene, so you pretty much know what to expect. The full length was fantastic, so I'll probably upload that at some point soon. Check it out
Off Minor - Some Blood Aggressive, angular post hardcore/emo/punk or whatever you want to call it. These dudes toured alllll over the place. Members of Amatuer Party and others. Check it out
Moondog - EP The NYHC classic from Walter and Co. that came before Gorilla Biscuits. This was given a proper digital release a few years ago. "Distance" is one of Walter's best.
Rosetta - Wake/Lift I'm straight edge, so it's hard to say with certainty, but I'd imagine this record would be the perfect soundtrack to doing hallucinogens on Venus.
Small Brown Bike - Nail Yourself to the Ground People always seem to forget about this one and often write it off because it came from the more relaxed era after the epic Dead Reckoning, but I still love it.
Against Me - Live at WKDU This was recorded live on the air a few years ago before an evening show. It's just Tom acoustic. It's got a few of the "hits" and an early version of one or two songs.
Castevet - I Know What a Lion Is Mid 90s inspired emo from Chicago. They recently put out an LP that is pretty great, so try and pick that up. Hopefully they come to Philly soon.
Handsome - s/t 90s post hardcore, featuring Jeremy who later went on to play in Jets to Brazil. There's a rumor of an unreleased LP, so if I ever get that, I'll throw it up here.
Canadian Rifle - s/t 7" Gruff punk rock that wouldn't sound out of place in Gainesville. Al Burian played on this record, but has since left the band. Their new LP sounds a lot like Leatherface.
The Honor System - Single File Holy crap, how haven't I posted this already? An overlooked Chicago classic featuring ex-members of The Broadways. When The Lawrence Arms covered these guys a few years ago they said this band featured "the original angry guy with a beard" and that's totally true. Check it out
Lion of Judah - Universal Peace Dischord inspired harDCore from this band that I've managed to miss too many times. They have a new record coming out soon.
Seasick - Ouroboros I don't normally post newer releases, particularly from local-ish bands, but this is a band who seems to get overlooked often. Thrashy hardcore punk with political lyrics. Great stuff.
The Hate Holiday - EP Six songs of poppy punk, at times like Hot Water Music, at times like Fairweather. Members went on to No Roses and occasional spottings at the Church.
Gatsby's American Dream - Ribbons and Sugar This band got written off too easily because their singer's voice was too poppy, but they were really a progressive, forward-thinking indie rock band doing some awesome stuff. It's a shame more people didn't pay attention.
Liars Academy - No News is Good News Deep Elm styled indie rock from members of Cross My Heart and Strike Anywhere. Aside from the one song that sounds like Everclear, this is a truly under-appreciated record.
Paul Baribeau and Ginger Alford - Darkness on the Edge of Your Town Folk-punk hero Paul B and Ginger of Good Luck did an acoustic record of Springsteen covers. Not all the best covers, but there are some good fun moments on here. I heard these live shows were really fun.
Yo Man Go - Discography If You Make It released this as a digital download. Great pop punk with a newer Long Island sound, much like Latterman. Featuring the wonderful Steve Roche (Amateur Party) on drums.
Wise and Foolish Builders - Someone Like Smith Piano rock ala Rufus Wainwright, Coldplay, and lots of other British bands. Sorry, I only have this in .m4a and can't find my disc to re-rip. Suck it jimecore.
Days Away - The Feel of It Super catchy and poppy punk rock ala New Found Glory and other early 2000s bands. This was before they got really spacey and seemed to find drugs.
Plow United - Narcolepsy This was the final, posthumous release from one of my favorite bands of all time. Faster, angrier, and at times my favorite of their records. If you don't like this, this blog is probably the wrong place for you.
The Boils - When the Sun Goes Down The original release of the street punk classic from West Chester's favorites. This (and the following LP) really showed the peak of this band for me.
Olehole - Holemole Great post hardcore from ex-members of The Ghost. This was a tragically overlooked record of 2008. Oh, it's supposedly pronounced Holy Moly. Check it out
Look Mexico - The Crucial Collection Smart, layered, well played indie rock from this Florida band. They played one of the more refreshing sets I saw at Fest last year and seemed to truly love what they're doing.
Knives Out - Misc Songs A handful of songs from splits and comps etc. Philly hardcore featuring members of I Hate You, AAJ, American Nightmare, and tons more. Great stuff from another band that should've done more.
Ian - Demo Ian was a shortlived West Chester band that really took the emotional hardcore/Boy Sets Fire kinda sound. Not too many bands were doing this around WC at the time, but unfortunately, Ian seemed to disappear as quickly as they showed up. Check it out
Bearings - Demo 7" These dudes are a newish indie rock/post hardcore band from Philly not unlike Small Brown Bike and stuff like that .They recently posted their demo on mediafire, but you should totally buy it and go see them because they're great. I'd say all of these nice things even if I wasn't friends with Josh. This is their first release, so it's not perfect, but it's an awesome start and I can't wait to see what they do next. You can check them out here.
Panic - Dying for It You should probably already have this, but if you don't, take a (very) few minutes and listen to this Boston hardcore classic. Bitter, angry, fast, and grating. Great for this cold weather.
Ringers - Detention Hall I've posted their album Curses before, and this is more of the same. Fun pop punk, that at times reminds me of AOCTW-era Rancid. I'll miss seeing them at Fest this year, since the only two times I've seen them were there.
Cadillac Blindside - Read the Book, Seen the Movie Early 2000s indie rock/pop punk/emo not unlike early Get Up Kids or bands of that style. Check it out
